The Need
Tamil Nadu’s position within the rain shadow of the Western Ghatts, gives it a natural aridity. Add to this the impacts of heavily irrigated intensive agriculture and a swiftly destabilizing monsoon climate, and you find the accelerating desertification, soil erosion and potential famine that under pins the need for swift reforestation across the state. Average green-cover across the state is 17%, but in many places it is below 5%. PGH intends to raise green cover back up to 33% in order to reverse the current environmental trajectory.
